This Thursday is the Fat Thursday in Poland because it is the last one before the Lent. Traditionally it is the day to regale on doughnuts or pastry straws (faworki). Everybody eats enormous amounts of doughnuts on this day despite the number of calories and the rules of healthy nutrition, so today the doughnut can be easily called “the king of Polish tables”.
The tradition of eating doughnuts on the Fat Thursday appeared in Poland in 17th century. It is believed that one has to eat at least one doughnut on this day in order to attract luck.
