On December 24, 1914 began the battle of Łowczówek which is situated to the south of Tarnów. Units of the Polish Legions were urgently recalled from the Nowy Sącz in order to strengthen the broken front line. Without Józef Piłsudski who was in Vienna, the Legions were under the command of Kazimierz Sosnkowski. After the two day battle, Polish units managed to stop the advancing Russians. 128 legionnaires died in the battle, 342 were wounded.
